Holiday Courses

Course Content

During holiday courses students will study a select range of literary and non-literary texts in order to refine their understanding of the writer’s craft. Texts are chosen according to the class level so as to offer students the best possible experience of English literature and language giving them the opportunity to discover the rich variety and depth literature that spans both time and place. Students will study texts from various sources including the literary canon which have clearly withstood the test of time. Great literature offers us the chance to explore not only the elegance and sophistication of writing at its best but also gives us a penetrating insight into the human condition, a chance to gain a better understanding of ourselves and what it means to be human. It provides an experience that can help us navigate our journey in life and hopefully encourage a mature and moral outlook on our world.

Through the carefully guided close analysis of the distinctive features of language, form, structure and style of texts as well as narrative point of view and the influence of ‘voice’, students will understand the stylistic conventions of the various genres as well as the significant ideas they explore. In turn, they will also recognise the way writers achieve their purpose and shape readers’ responses.
They will then be able to apply the knowledge learned to develop their own writing skills in a range of homework responses including formal, analytical tasks such as the essay, as well as persuasive, discursive and creative compositions.

Homework will be marked in detail paying attention to fundamentals such as spelling, grammar, vocabulary, expression, use of language elements appropriate to the tasks, structure and logical development of their responses.
