Years 5-6 Critical Study of Literature and Language

Preliminary note

In ALL courses students receive weekly homework that is marked in detail and returned promptly to enable them to understand their strengths as well as areas of improvement. This is a vital aspect of their progress.

It is important for students to expand their personal vocabulary in order to enrich the range of their expression both written and oral, therefore vocabulary extension and testing continues throughout the year in all classes.

At this level students will complete a detailed critical examination of at least one novel, a complete play as well as a many other texts including poetry, short stories, speeches, news texts (editorials, feature articles, other op-ed, news articles, advertising, interviews) autobiography/biography as well as other text types such as visual texts.
The course involves a highly detailed analysis of the language features and structure of the texts in relation to the issues and themes raised that continue to preoccupy writers through time. Through the close study of major literary texts integrated with other text types students learn to understand the various perspectives and stylistic approaches adopted by writers to achieve their purposes.

Students will also study a complete Shakespearean play in great detail allowing them to gain an early foundation in understanding aspects of Shakespeare’s context, themes and literary qualities. Relating reading materials are also selected to promote students’ awareness of significant issues in our world and to enable students to perceive connections between and among texts drawn from different genres and contexts.

The course will develop students’ skills in formal and analytical responses addressed in homework tasks.
