Years 7-8 Critical Study of Literature and Language

Preliminary note

In ALL courses students receive weekly homework that is marked in detail and returned promptly to enable them to understand their strengths as well as areas of improvement. This is a vital aspect of their progress.

It is important for students to expand their personal vocabulary in order to enrich the range of their expression both written and oral, therefore vocabulary extension and testing continues throughout the year in all classes.

Course Content

Students will analyse one novel (possibly two depending on time) during the year as well as a complete play in addition to poetry, short stories and non-literary texts (news genres including op-ed, news stories, speeches, interviews, biography/autobiography, visual texts)

The analysis of language, form and features of texts is at the heart of the course giving students the ability to recognise and analyse the way texts vary in accordance with the composer’s purpose and style.

The detailed study of a complete Shakespeare play is standard. Through this close study students learn how Shakespeare’s context shapes our understanding of the meaning of his works.

Written work involves formal and creative responses to literature.

Students learn how to compose sophisticated responses in all key writing genres including essays, narratives, discursive, persuasive, argumentative, informative and other compositions.

At this stage students are expanding and improving their skills in analysing texts in terms of their language features, literary devices and form. In so doing they are engaged in developing more complex and innovative responses to creative writing stimuli as well as conciseness and clarity of expression in formal responses such as long answers and essays.

At all times from the classes and the detailed marking and editing of their homework, students are gaining new vocabulary, improving their writing style, structure and expression as well as being guided on their grammar.

Feel Very Lucky The Kids Can Be Your Students!

Dear Mr McDonald
Hope you are well. Just want to say a big thank you for teaching my son Adrain. He just got an offer from North Sydney Boys’ High School yesterday and he is in Band A, James Ruse reserved list. He will very likely get into JR as he is at the top of the list. He did particularly well in reading comprehension (top 10%).
Thank you so much from the bottom of my hear. You not only teach students literature but also help build their values which is more important than any academic achievement. I always feel lucky that my children are your students!
