Years 3-4 Critical Study of Literature and Language

Preliminary note

In ALL courses students receive weekly homework that is marked in detail and returned promptly to enable them to understand their strengths as well as areas of improvement. This is a vital aspect of their progress.

It is important for students to expand their personal vocabulary in order to enrich the range of their expression both written and oral, therefore vocabulary extension and testing continues throughout the year in all classes.

Course Content

During the year students will study in detail texts drawn from the major literary genres: novels short stories, poetry and drama. Each module studied will incorporate related texts requiring students to understand and critically explore the way other texts can broaden their understanding of key areas of the core text such as thematic and stylistic features. This will enhance their abilities in evaluative and critical thinking as well as in making connections between and among a variety of text types.

Students will study at least one novel during the year as well as a suite of poetry and short stories. These will be accompanied by excerpts from other texts both literary and non-literary to be compared and contrasted with the core text thereby developing a sophisticated understanding of the relationship between various text types in terms of their purposes and differences in forms and features.
